The Problem Nobody Wanted:
For years, Ajegunle had talent. Raw, restless, brilliant talent. But after primary school, the structure vanished. Kids aged 10 to 14 fell through the cracks — too old for nursery tournaments, too young for academies that wanted “ready-made” players. Saturday mornings meant the streets, not a stadium.
Coaches complained. Parents worried. Politicians promised. Nothing moved.
The Chairman Who Opened the Door:
Hon. Fatai Adekunle Ayoola, then Executive Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun LGA, did what government rarely does — he listened, then he acted. He approved the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Sports Council and worked with the 5th Legislative Arm to pass it into law. For the first time, sports in Ajegunle had legal backing. It was no longer a hustle. It was an institution.
But Ayoola didn’t stop at paperwork. He knew structures need fuel. So he scouted Yemi Idowu — brought the philanthropist and sports investor to Ajegunle and said, “Come and see what we can build here.”
The Man Who Refused to Wait:
With legal backing secured, I, McAnthony Anaelechukwu stepped in as the first Director General and Initiator of the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Sports Council. I didn’t wait for handouts. I organized Ajegunle’s Saturdays.
I found the coaches. I registered the teams. I set the rules. I became the first in Nigeria to organise a successful Under-14 Football League. A council with law and a leader was ready. It just needed a home.
The Foundation That Said Yes:
Yemi Idowu came to Ajegunle because Ayoola called. He looked around and saw what everyone else missed: not a ghetto, but a goldmine. Through the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, he didn’t do press conferences. He didn’t cut ribbons. He opened the Nathaniel Idowu Football Pitch at Oregie and said, “Use it.”
Then “he went further. He built the New Maracana Sports Complex in Tolu so that talents can be unearthed — giving 150 girls their own space through the “Let Her Play Project” while the boys ran their league on a proper pitch paving way for proper youth development in Ajegunle.
12 Weeks That Changed Everything:
For 12 Saturdays, from 7am to 10pm, Ajegunle changed its rhythm.
Ajeromi-Ifelodun Sports Council brought the structure: fixtures, referees, discipline, weekly reports before Sunday morning.
Nathaniel Idowu Foundation brought the fuel: venues, prize money, credibility that made Hon. Sabur Akanbi Oluwa bring medals.
Structure met resources. Local access met national vision. And on the pitch, proof showed up.
The Team That Proved It: Ajegunle United Sporting Club became the story inside the story. They didn’t win the trophy, but they won the metrics that matter:
They conceded 11 goals in 11 matches — the Best Defence in Nigeria.
Their keeper, Divine Anyanwu won Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
Solomon James. scored Goal of the Season in the 2–1 third-place win.
They lost a semi-final on penalties to Strong Dove FA. Most teams fold. Ajegunle United came back the same day and took bronze. That’s not luck. That’s coaching. That’s council. That’s foundation.

The Ending That’s Really a Beginning:
Next month at New Maracana Sports Complex, Tolu, there’s an award ceremony. League Best 11 will be unveiled. Solomon James will be there. The best goalkeeper will be there. The sponsors who get in now will be there too.
This is “a partnership that works”. Not because it’s perfect. Because it’s intentional.
Yoruba foresight chose the sea and built Lagos.
Igbo resilience chose commerce and rebuilt the East.
Ajegunle intent chose sport — and built the best U-14 league in Nigeria.
Hon. Fatai Adekunle Ayoola, you gave it law.
McAnthony Anaelechukwu, I gave it life.
Yemi Idowu, you gave it a home.
Together, we gave it proof.
