The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has expressed unwavering confidence in the country’s relay teams as they prepare to compete at the forthcoming World Relays in Botswana.
Okowa, while speaking ahead of the team’s departure, revealed that six Nigerian relay teams will represent the nation at the global event. He noted that the athletes, most of whom are young and emerging talents, have shown great promise in training and are determined to make Nigeria proud on the international stage.
According to the AFN President, the federation, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), has put in place the necessary support systems to ensure the athletes are in top shape for the competition. He emphasized that beyond institutional backing, the encouragement and prayers of Nigerians will play a vital role in inspiring the athletes to deliver exceptional performances.
“I have strong belief in these young athletes. With the level of preparation they have undergone and the support from the National Sports Commission, I am confident they will surprise the world,” Okowa stated.
He further explained that the World Relays will serve as a crucial platform for the athletes to achieve qualifying standards for the Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place later in the year. He added that the competition would not only test their readiness but also provide them with valuable international exposure.
Okowa reiterated that Nigeria has a rich history in relay events and expressed optimism that the current crop of athletes will uphold that legacy while building a new era of success for the country.
The Nigerian team is scheduled to depart for Botswana on April 26 and is expected to arrive on April 27, where final preparations will be concluded ahead of the commencement of the World Relays.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to continue supporting the team, noting that their encouragement remains a key motivating factor as the athletes aim to achieve podium finishes and secure qualification spots for future international competitions.
