Popularly known for his strength, determination, and goalscoring ability during his playing days, the former Super Eagles striker has transformed himself into a respected football administrator, youth developer, philanthropist, and visionary committed to building the future of Nigerian football.
Born on November 3, 1974, in Jos, Plateau State, Akwuegbu’s football journey began with Mighty Jets before taking him across Europe and Asia. He enjoyed successful spells with clubs in Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, England, and China, earning a reputation as one of Nigeria’s dependable strikers abroad. Internationally, he represented Nigeria 35 times, scored 10 goals, and was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Rather than stepping away from football after retirement, Akwuegbu chose to invest his experience where it matters most *grassroots development.
As Technical Director of Mighty Jets FC and founder of Ben Akwuegbu Football Club, he has dedicated himself to identifying, mentoring, and nurturing young talents capable of representing Nigeria at the highest level.
His latest achievement further demonstrates his commitment to youth football. Akwuegbu has successfully acquired an NLO Division 2 slot for Ben Akwuegbu U-19 FC, creating another pathway for talented young players to compete in organized league football. The acquisition, officially recognized by the Nationwide League One leadership, is expected to strengthen grassroots football development in Plateau State and provide more opportunities for emerging stars.
The Plateau State Football Association has also endorsed Ben Akwuegbu U-19 FC as an affiliated club, recognizing his unwavering contributions to football development and youth empowerment.
His existing Ben Akwuegbu Football Club continues to compete in NLO Division One, while the U-19 side prepares for its debut in NLO Division Two, reflecting a long-term vision of sustainable player development.
Away from football administration, Akwuegbu is equally admired for his humanitarian work. Widely respected as a sports philanthropist, he regularly supports underprivileged children and assists young footballers, providing opportunities that extend beyond the football pitch.
His passion for helping others has earned him admiration from many within and outside the sporting community.
