It was billed as a final between the tournament’s two powerhouses. It ended as a masterclass in resilience, controversy, and late drama.
Zone 7 upset pre-tournament favourites Zone 8 with a 2-1 victory on Saturday at the prestigious Nathaniel Idowu Football Pitch, Oregun, to clinch the inaugural Hopeage Football Championship trophy.
The 8-team competition, organized by the Hopeage Foundation, was designed to unearth talent for the forthcoming Hopeage Football Academy. What it delivered instead was 90 minutes of raw artistry, tension, and a reminder that football is never decided until the final whistle.

Before kickoff, the atmosphere was more than football. Spectators, coaches, scouts, and community leaders gathered as Saint Edmund Ikejiuono Anyahamiwe, Convener of the Championship and Founder of Hopeage Foundation, addressed the crowd.
“HOPEAGE is a great foundation building for a great nation and for great people,” Anyahamiwe said. “It is focused on the young people — from the age of futuristic hope, of anticipation of becoming a successful star to be reckoned with in the nation, community, or the world.”
He charged stakeholders to align with the foundation’s vision.
“Men and women of like mind should team up as stakeholders as the voice of projecting the dream of families and nation building. A successful nation demands a successful dream of developing young people of ambitious aspirations, of good and meaningful thoughts of success.”
After traditional ceremonies, the final exploded into life early. In the 6th minute, Zone 8’s Oluwafemi Gabriel was shown a straight red card for hauling down a Zone 7 attacker who was through on goal. Down to 10 men for 84 minutes, Zone 8 were expected to crumble.
They didn’t.
Zone 7 struck first in the 9th minute when Victor Nwosu finished clinically to put them 1-0 up.
But Zone 8 responded instantly. Tournament top scorer Sylvester Nwonye drew his side level in the 11th minute to make it 1-1 at the break.
What followed was a tactical chess match. Zone 7 probed with pace out wide. Zone 8, despite being a man down, defended in compact lines and hit on the counter. Chances came and went at both ends. Goalkeepers were tested. Forwards fluffed. The crowd grew louder with every near-miss.
As the clock ticked toward 90 minutes, penalties loomed. Then came the turning point.
In the 85th minute, Zone 7 drove into the box and went down under a challenge. The referee paused, went to the VAR monitor, and pointed to the spot. Replays confirmed it — a clear penalty.
With the stadium holding its breath, Victor Nwosu stepped up in the 86th minute. Cool. Composed. To complete his brace. 2-1 Zone 7.
Zone 8 threw everything forward in the final minutes, but Zone 7 held firm to spark wild celebrations.
Tournament honours
The championship, which kicked off with 8 zones, lived up to its promise of competitiveness.
A day earlier, Zone 2 secured 3rd place on July 31, edging Zone 6 1-0 in a gritty playoff.
Individual awards also highlighted breakout stars:
– Highest Goal Scorer: Nwonye Sylvester, Zone 8
– Most Valuable Player: Jamil Adam, Zone 7
– Best Goalkeeper: Chijioke Johnbosco, Zone 7
The tournament served a dual purpose: crowning champions and scouting the next generation. Selected players from across all zones will form the core of the Hopeage Football Academy, set to be unveiled during the Hopeage Conference at the Recovery Dome, Godland Estate, Ishashi, Okokomaiko.
For Saint Anyahamiwe, the message was clear — this was just the beginning.
“Today we saw dreams on the pitch. Tomorrow we build the platform for those dreams to become careers.”
With goals, red cards, VAR drama, and an upset for the ages, Zone 7 didn’t just win a trophy. They announced themselves. And Hopeage announced its arrival as a serious force in grassroots football development.
