The Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria Premier Football League has come and gone, but one thing remains worrying — the apparent lack of media presence and publicity around such an important event.
For a league that wants to be regarded as the top professional football competition in Nigeria, this is an area that must urgently improve.
You cannot build a strong and commercially attractive league without the media. Publicity, visibility, proper communication and regular engagement with journalists and football stakeholders are essential to growing the product.
If the league continues to operate with this low level of media engagement, then Nigerians should not expect much change in the standard and visibility of the competition next season.
Those saddled with the responsibility of running Nigeria’s top-flight league must up their game. The NPFL should be setting the standard for every other league in the country, not struggling to match the level of publicity and communication expected of a professional sporting competition.
Interestingly, this won’t happens in the lower leagues, particularly the Nigeria National League (NNL) and Nationwide League One (NLO).
The NPFL is the flagship football league in Nigeria. It deserves better organisation, better communication, better publicity and a stronger relationship with the media.
