tor of the AthIetics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Gabriel Okon has said Nigeria will enter athletes in events which athletes have comparative advantage over others.
Gabriel Okon in an interview with Radio Nigeria network sports programme stressed that it would be a wild goose chase should Nigeria enter athletes in all events without direct targets for medals.
“There are many events and Nigeria have carefully selected athletes in areas we have strength, other countries also do it.”
He alluded to the fact that as host country, there is pressure on the athletes to excel on home soil, but while that is valid, it is also advisable to field athletes in our place of strength than weakness.
He declared that Team Nigeria athletes are doing well in camp and will move to the games village two days to the Start of CAA U18-20 Championship in Abeokuta.
The AFN Technical Director called on athletics fraternity to be supportive, adding that competitions such as this would need supporters to ginger athletes even when things are not going rightly.
In a related development, top delegates and officials of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), have began arriving in the country ahead of the biennial championship scheduled to hold from the 16th to 20th of this month, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, South-Western, Nigeria.
The delegates were ushered into the country by the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa. Among the first set of arrivals for the 5-day championship are the President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Colonel Maboum Kalcaba, Confederation Scribe Lamine Fati and some media men.
Members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), are already on ground in Abeokuta to further preparations for the multi-event championship.
