A Call to Stakeholders in Nigerian Football
Nigeria’s exit from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers should mark a turning point for a genuine reset of our football system. The moment calls for a coordinated effort to refocus and build a model that reflects our realities while meeting global expectations. My appeal to football stakeholders is to commit to a unified national philosophy that strengthens structures across every level of the game.
1. Establish a central data management system supported by continuous training for coaches, referees and team managers. This will improve decision-making, transparency and talent tracking.
2. Create a clear player development pathway with defined playing standards. The environment at every age group must be appropriate for learning and long-term progression.
3. Require formal clearance for all individuals working with players under the age of seventeen to reduce the risk of abuse and ensure safe participation.
4. Provide safeguarding, welfare and first aid training for everyone involved in football. A safe and informed workforce is foundational to a modern system.
5. Ensure comprehensive insurance coverage for clubs, academies and grassroots teams so that participants are protected and operational risks are reduced.
6. Maintain uniform standards across regions and across membership bodies. Consistency strengthens credibility and improves the experience for players and staff.
7. Align youth development programmes with international benchmarks so that Nigerian players are equipped for global competition.
8. Expand sustainable funding channels for grassroots clubs and teams. A healthy base supports the entire performance pyramid.
These steps offer a practical route to rebuilding trust and strengthening performance after a brutal campaign. They are presented as my contribution to the ongoing effort to reposition football development in Nigeria.
