Deep in Nigeria’s riverine communities, Fisherman Okro Soup is more than a meal—it is a celebration of the rivers, creeks and fishing heritage of the Niger Delta. Popular across South-South communities, the rich delicacy brings the freshness of the water into a single, colourful pot.

Its signature ingredients include fresh fish, prawns or shrimps, crab, periwinkle, ngolo/whelks, crayfish, dried or smoked fish, okro, pepper, onions, palm oil and local herbs such as uziza. Some traditional variations use cocoyam or pounded yam as a thickener.

The combination produces a spicy, aromatic and seafood-rich soup, often enjoyed with pounded yam, garri, semo or other swallows.

For many Niger Delta families, Fisherman Okro Soup represents hospitality, abundance and a deep connection between food and the waterways that sustain their communities.
