The National Sports Commission (NSC) has rolled out one of the most attractive welfare packages ever offered to Team Nigeria athletes ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with competitors set to receive higher allowances, improved travel support and substantial cash rewards for podium finishes.

The package, approved by the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, is designed to motivate athletes and officials as Nigeria prepares for the Games.

Under the new incentive scheme, every athlete will earn $200 per day throughout the competition, while coaches will receive $250 daily, an increase from the $150 and $200 paid respectively during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The reward system for medal winners has also been significantly enhanced. Athletes who win gold medals will receive an immediate $3,000 cash prize, while silver and bronze medalists will earn $2,000 and $1,000 respectively. Coaches will also be rewarded for every medal won by their athletes.

In addition, the Federal Government will pay performance bonuses directly into the bank accounts of medalists.

Gold medalists will receive an extra $5,000, silver medalists $3,000, and bronze medalists $2,000.

With both incentives combined, a Nigerian athlete who wins a gold medal stands to earn up to $8,000.

To ease the financial burden of travelling to and from camp, the NSC has approved ₦500,000 for every athlete and official.

The amount comprises ₦250,000 for transportation to the national camp in Abuja and another ₦250,000 to facilitate the early booking of return flights after the Games.

The Commission has also reviewed upward the local camping allowances. Athletes will now receive ₦5,000 daily, while officials will earn ₦7,500 per day, replacing the previous ₦1,000 to ₦2,000 daily allowance.

Athletes and coaches also benefited from improved welfare during the overseas training camp, where competitors received $150 per day and coaches $200 per day.

According to the NSC, payments under the welfare package have already been processed in most cases, with only a few outstanding transactions delayed by banking issues, which are being resolved in collaboration with the relevant National Sports Federations.

For decades, the development of sports in Nigeria has revolved almost entirely around government funding.

From national trials and championships to international competitions and athletes’ welfare, many Sports Federations and Associations have continued to depend almost exclusively on allocations from the government.

While government has an undeniable responsibility in sports development, this culture of overdependence has become one of the greatest obstacles to the growth of Nigerian sports.

The reality is simple, no modern sporting nation develops solely on government funding.

Across the world, successful sports federations aggressively pursue corporate sponsorships, commercial partnerships, media rights, merchandising opportunities and private investments.

These revenue streams allow them to organize regular competitions, develop grassroots talents and execute long-term development plans.

In Nigeria, however, many federations become active only when government releases funds for major international events.

Once those competitions are over, activities grind to a halt until another government intervention arrives.

This cycle has denied thousands of talented athletes the consistent competitions needed to improve and qualify for international championships.

One of the weakest links in the current structure is the performance of zonal representatives.

These elected officials are expected to serve as the engine room of grassroots sports development within their respective regions.

Unfortunately, many have failed to attract a single sponsor or organize even one meaningful championship in their zones throughout an entire year.

A zonal representative should not merely hold a title. The position should come with measurable responsibilities, engaging state governments, local businesses, educational institutions and private organizations to support competitions and talent discovery.

If every zone organized at least one major championship annually, Nigerian sports would witness a significant increase in athlete participation and talent identification.

Equally disturbing is the inability of some federations to function as true governing bodies.

Several federations rarely convene strategic meetings to evaluate their progress, review development programmes or create sustainable roadmaps.

Instead, meetings often become emergency gatherings held only when international competitions are approaching or government funding is expected.

A federation that does not meet regularly cannot effectively plan. It cannot monitor the progress of its athletes, assess the performance of coaches, review technical programmes or identify commercial opportunities.

Strategic planning should be a continuous process, not an occasional reaction to upcoming competitions.

Sports administration is no longer just about selecting athletes and attending championships. It is about leadership, innovation, marketing and relationship building.

Every federation should have a functional marketing and sponsorship committee tasked with attracting corporate partners and creating value for investors.

Companies invest where they see visibility, professionalism and measurable returns not where there is constant dependence on government intervention.

This is also a challenge to federation presidents, board members and zonal representatives to redefine their legacy.

Success should not be measured solely by medals won at international competitions but also by the structures built, the competitions organized, the sponsors secured and the opportunities created for young athletes.

The National Sports Commission cannot shoulder every financial burden. Government resources are limited, and several sectors compete for the same funds.

Sports administrators must therefore embrace financial creativity, accountability and strategic partnerships if Nigerian sports are to compete consistently with the world’s best.

The future of Nigerian sports depends not only on talented athletes but also on visionary administrators who understand that sponsorship is earned through professionalism, planning and value creation, not by waiting for government releases.

The time has come for Nigerian Sports Federations and Associations to move beyond dependency and embrace sustainability.

That shift may well determine whether Nigerian sports merely survive or truly thrive.

During FIFA World Cup 2026 activities in Atlanta, I experienced something that caused me to pause and reflect.

It was not the match.

It was not the VIP access.

It was not even the opportunity to stand alongside fellow footballers from different parts of the world.

It was the realization that decades after our playing careers, FIFA still remembers.

In football, FIFA sits at the highest level of the game. Players may represent clubs, leagues, regions, youth national teams, Olympic teams, or senior national teams. Yet every footballer understands that FIFA represents the pinnacle of international football.

That is why the FIFA Legends designation carries special meaning.

Despite representing Nigeria internationally and participating in FIFA competitions as a player, I had never previously attended a FIFA World Cup match as a spectator.

This was my first.

The atmosphere was electric.

The organization was exceptional.

The global nature of the event was unmistakable.

Watching supporters from different countries gather under one roof reminded me why football remains the world’s game.

*A Match That Refused to End Quietly*

Czechia appeared destined for victory.

Disciplined.

Organized.

Efficient.

They took the lead and controlled significant portions of the contest.

But football rarely follows a script.

As the match entered its closing stages, South Africa found the equalizer that transformed disappointment into celebration.

*Why I Wanted South Africa to Win*

I am aware of the difficult conversations surrounding *xenophobic attacks* that have affected fellow Africans in South Africa over the years.

Those concerns are real.

Those concerns matter.

And they deserve continued attention.

But football is different.

For ninety minutes, I was not viewing South Africa through politics.

I was viewing South Africa through football.

And as an African, I found myself hoping they would find a way back into the game.

Not because difficult issues should be ignored.

But because football remains one of the few places where Africans can celebrate together rather than divide themselves.

On this day, I wanted Africa to smile.

And when South Africa equalized, part of Africa smiled.

*When Football Becomes Bigger Than Football*

After the match, the celebration continued outside the stadium.

The rain came.

Nobody cared.

South African supporters continued singing and dancing.

What struck me most was the unity I witnessed.

Black South Africans.

White South Africans.

Young and old.

Men and women.

Singing together.

Dancing together.

Celebrating together.

Many proudly wore South African colors and traditional attire.

I stood there watching, listening, and appreciating every moment.

I did not understand all the words of the songs being sung.

I did not need to.

Their joy required no translation.

Their unity required no explanation.

The scene reminded me of *Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s* dream of people coming together across racial lines in mutual respect and common purpose.

That evening, football became bigger than football.

Morocco reaffirmed its status as Africa’s taekwondo powerhouse by winning the African Taekwondo Championships for a third consecutive time, while Nigeria recorded one of its best-ever performances at the continental showpiece with a historic seven-medal haul in Bamako, Mali.

The championship, held from May 29 to 31, attracted more than 300 athletes from 32 countries, who battled for continental honours across various categories.

Morocco once again dominated proceedings, finishing top in both the men’s and women’s divisions to successfully defend the title it has held since 2022.

The North Africans secured six gold medals through Soufiane El Asbi in the men’s +87kg category, Haitam Zaghouti in the men’s -80kg division, Mohamed Amine Dhaheri in the men’s -68kg class, Amina Dehhaoui in the women’s -57kg category, Farah Touzani in the women’s -46kg division and Oumaima El Bouchti in the women’s -53kg event.

Morocco’s impressive campaign was further strengthened by three silver medals won by Nezha El Assal, Hajiba Harakat and Nada Laaraj, while Fatima Zahra Nems, Khadija Lamdarar, Lamia El Bekour, Mariam Enniya, Abdelhamid Abdouni and Zakaria Lakhouir contributed six bronze medals.

The country’s dominance was also reflected in the individual awards, with Moroccan official Naima Belach named Best Referee. Morocco’s Badr Smaili claimed the Best Men’s Coach award, while Hakima El Meslahy was honoured as Best Women’s Coach after guiding the female team to another continental triumph.

Despite Morocco’s overwhelming success, Nigeria emerged as one of the standout performers of the championship, returning home with seven medals from an 11-athlete squad and two coaches.

Nigeria won three gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals to underline the country’s growing influence in African taekwondo.

The gold medals were won by Ability Mathew Udom in the Para Taekwondo category, Haruna Usman in Poomsae and Aderibigbe Faridah in Kyorugi sparring.

The country’s only silver medal came through the combined efforts of Abdulafeez and Faridah in the Poomsae event, while Joel Jordan, Chidinma Okoko and Salaudeen Abdulazeez secured bronze medals to complete Nigeria’s tally.

The achievement is particularly significant given Nigeria’s modest record at the African Championships since the competition was first staged in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1996.

Prior to Bamako 2026, Nigeria had won only two gold medals, nine silver medals and 19 bronze medals in the history of the tournament.

Reacting to the team’s performance, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Ms. Temitayo Kuburat Popoola, praised the athletes, coaches and support staff for their determination and commitment.

“The team’s remarkable performance reflects the dedication, hard work and resilience of the athletes, coaches and support personnel who represented Nigeria with distinction on the continental stage,” Popoola said.

The federation, in a statement, congratulated the medal winners and technical crew for their exceptional outing, describing the result as further evidence of Nigeria’s growing strength in the sport.

It also acknowledged the support of the National Sports Commission, stakeholders and supporters whose contributions played a crucial role in the team’s success.

According to the federation, the achievement will serve as motivation to continue investing in athlete development and strengthening Nigeria’s position among Africa’s leading taekwondo nations.
