GROSSLY UNDERFUNDED WARRI WOLVES FOOTBALL CLUB STRUGGLES IN ONGOING NIGERIA NATIONAL LEAGUE SUPER 8
In the last 10 years, Warri Wolves Football Club has been languishing in the lower Nigeria National League due to gross negligence of those appointed as chairmen of the Delta State Sports Commission. It’s now a norm in Delta State that any Governor that emerges would appoint his brother as chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission.
Former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan blazed the trail in 2007, and that tradition has come to stay, irrespective of the incompetence associated with that norm. Uduaghan appointed his brother-in-law as chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission for 8 years. Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa also appointed his brother for 8 years, and current Governor Sheriff Oborevwori towed the same line by appointing his brother, and it must also be for 8 years.
What these relatives of these Governors do as chairmen of the Delta State Sports Commission is to ensure that they win every National Sports Festival with athletes you can hardly find in the state after every National Sports Festival. Why would a state that wins the National Sports Festival every 2 years have a football club that is languishing in the lower NNL for almost 10 years? Where are the talents that are always winning the National Youth Games and National Sports Festival every 2 years?
It’s alleged that the over ₦105M released by the Delta State government for the NNL Super 8 has disappeared into thin air between the chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission and a retired Director-General of the commission who is shamefully acting as a personal assistant to the chairman of the commission.
Warri Wolves FC disgracefully lost their first match 1-0 to Osun United FC due to lack of motivation, and from the look of things, may lose the opportunity of returning to the Premier League, even with the huge advantage of being the host of the tournament. If Warri Wolves fail to qualify for the Premier League, the chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission and his personal assistant should be held responsible.
This is what you get when politics takes priority over merit; incompetent people are appointed into public office.
