Nigeria does not have to copy Europe. But if we admire the product, we should understand how the people producing it are represented, protected and given a voice.

Millions of Nigerians watch the English Premier League, Spainโ€™s LaLiga and other European competitions every week.

We know the clubs. We know the managers. We wear the jerseys. We follow transfers. We argue about referees and VAR.

But perhaps we have concentrated too much on the product and not enough on the machinery behind it.

In England, professional footballers are represented by the Professional Footballersโ€™ Association โ€” the PFA.

Its role goes far beyond welfare assistance.

The PFA participates in the Professional Football Negotiating and Consultative Committee, where matters affecting players and the professional game are discussed alongside representatives of the leagues and The Football Association.

According to the PFA, changes to playersโ€™ conditions cannot simply be imposed without its agreement. The union also represents player interests on bodies including the FA Council and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited Technical Board.

That means the players are not standing outside football administration waiting to be informed of decisions affecting them.

And they do not merely occupy that seat symbolically.

The PFA has repeatedly raised concerns about fixture congestion, inadequate recovery time and excessive player workload.

PFA chief executive Maheta Molango has publicly warned about the pressures created by an increasingly crowded football calendar, while players themselves have complained that their concerns about workload and scheduling are not always given sufficient weight.

The issue became serious enough that, in 2024, the PFA joined other European player unions in legal action challenging FIFAโ€™s approach to the international match calendar and the expanded Club World Cup. FIFPRO Europe and European Leagues also filed a complaint with the European Commission, arguing that the overloaded calendar threatened player safety and well-being.

That is important because it shows what representation looks like in practice.

Spain adds another principle โ€” legitimacy.

In May 2026, players in the 42 dressing rooms of LaLigaโ€™s First and Second Divisions voted on who should represent them in negotiations for their next collective agreement.

    The Asociaciรณn de Futbolistas Espaรฑoles โ€” AFE โ€” received 8๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฒ ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€, ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐Ÿต๐Ÿฏ.

Those negotiations cover fundamental employment matters including minimum salary, rest periods, holidays and preseason conditions.

    Consider the principle.

The federation does not choose who speaks for the players.

The league does not appoint the playersโ€™ voice.

The clubs do not select the organisation that will negotiate with them.

The Netherlands provides another useful lesson, particularly for womenโ€™s football.

Dutch women footballers and their unions have pushed for stronger employment conditions as the professional game has developed.

On August 20, 2026, clubs including Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV, FC Twente, AZ and HERA United, together with employers and the playersโ€™ unions VVCS and ProProf, announced a broader collective agreement for professional womenโ€™s football.

There is another structure Nigerians should understand.

For the first time, a player representative became a voting member of European footballโ€™s highest decision-making body.

Then, on June 10, 2026, FIFA formally recognised FIFPRO as the global representative body for professional footballers and as the social partner representing players as employees.

The agreement establishes a Global Social Dialogue Platform bringing players, clubs and leagues into collective discussions over transfers, welfare, occupational safety and other regulatory matters.

And that is where the European blueprint leads us to the central question for Nigeria.

Part 2 of 2 will examine what happens when Nigerian players do not have comparable institutional power โ€” and what the present reform moment can do about it.
