That was the reaction of 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝐎𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐡𝐮𝐚, a seasoned Nigerian sports journalist who has served as South-East Zonal Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, on 𝟐𝟎 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔.

A SportsBeat report by 𝐎𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚 𝐀𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐲𝐨, published the same day, was circulated across several Nigerian football WhatsApp forums. In 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐘𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 (𝐒𝐘𝐂), where Omokhua is an administrator, he reacted to the report carrying NANPF’s position that Tijani Babangida’s tenure as players’ union president expired in 2022.

The humour was brief. The issue behind it was not.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐅𝐏𝐑𝐎 𝐑𝐄𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐒

On 𝟐𝟑 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, FIFPRO stated that legitimate player representation must be “built from the players up” through structures providing independence, legitimacy and accountability. It also said member unions must be independent, meet governance standards and possess “a mandate from most players domestically.”

Against that standard, certain questions naturally arise.

Do today’s professional players know which organisation claims to represent them?

Are representatives regularly meeting and consulting active players?

How are leaders chosen?

How many current professionals participate in those processes?

How are women professionals represented?

And can those speaking for the players demonstrate that their mandate comes from the players themselves?

Under FIFPRO’s model, representation begins with the players. Meetings, titles, photographs and access to football authorities may demonstrate visibility. They do not, by themselves, establish a player mandate.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐍𝐄𝐖

On 𝟏𝟔 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔, veteran sports journalist 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐝𝐨𝐡, writing on his platform Beyond The Ball Game, publicly criticised divisions within Nigerian player representation and called for “one strong, unified voice.”

His wider intervention deserves separate examination.

On 𝟏𝟎 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, FIFA and FIFPRO signed an agreement formally recognising FIFPRO as FIFA’s global social partner on matters concerning professional players, further strengthening the importance of credible, player-led representation.

Whether the competing Nigerian organisations are right or wrong in their respective claims, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐣𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐈𝐂 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑

A Stoic maxim commonly attributed to 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐬 says:

“𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟.”

Applied to institutions, the principle is simple:

Omokhua put the contradiction more colourfully:

The laughter may pass.

The question remains:
