Thursday’s three matches at Inspire Sport Arena produced six points, eight goals and plenty of qualification drama. With the group stage determining 16 knockout places—two automatic places from each group plus the four best third-placed teams—every remaining fixture now carries serious weight.

COLLINS EDWIN SC 3–0 ECAS FA — GROUP F
Collins Edwin delivered one of the clearest statements of the day. Their 3–0 victory followed their earlier qualifying wins over Prince Kazeem Eletu FC and FC Bethel Sporting, showing that their competitive edge has carried into the group stage.
What Collins Edwin brought:
They combined attacking intent with defensive discipline. The three-goal margin is particularly valuable because goal difference can become decisive in a tightly packed group.
Their midfield, including Obias Chinonso, provided energy and ball progression, while forward Unite Amodu gave the attack another outlet.
ECAS FA, meanwhile, had previously shown considerable resilience, beating BILDA FA and Greenlock FC during qualification. Their problem against Collins was converting their competitive approach into goals.
Qualification picture: Collins Edwin have put themselves in a strong position, but they cannot relax. Group F also contains AUX FC and Elite Stars, with all four teams still having matches to play. AUX beat ECAS 1–0 before Elite Stars defeated AUX 2–1, meaning Collins’ +3 goal difference is already an important asset.
VIDO 99 FC 2–2 JP YOUNG STARS FC — GROUP A
This was arguably the most revealing contest of the three.
Vido 99 entered the match with a 3–1 opening victory over Emiloju FC, while JP Young Stars had drawn 1–1 with BYT Academical. The 2–2 draw means Vido move to four points, while JP rise to two.
What Vido 99 brought
Vido’s biggest strength remains their attacking mentality. Their qualifying campaign included wins over Star To Be FA and Goals FC, before the 3–1 group-stage victory over Emiloju. Their approach is built around intensity, quick transitions and attacking movement.
Players such as Joel Emanuel, Victor Adebayo, Abdulhamid Fatai, Adeleke Sunday Isaiah and Ehis Isaac have provided attacking options and depth.
What JP Young Stars brought
JP showed that they are difficult to break down. Their experience is significant: the club was founded in 2006 and has participated in tournaments outside Nigeria, while several of its players have progressed into professional football.
The draw also showed their ability to respond when Vido applied pressure.
Qualification picture: Vido are now in a favourable position with four points, but qualification is not yet mathematically settled. JP must take maximum advantage of their final group fixture against Emiloju. BYT Academical and Emiloju also remain alive, making Group A one of the groups where the final matchday could produce major movement.
36 LION FC 1–0 MARYLAND UNITED FC — GROUP D
This was the biggest statement of defensive authority.
36 Lion had already defeated Ighalo FA 4–1, and their 1–0 victory over Maryland gives them six points from two matches and a +4 goal difference.
The team has shown both sides of its game: explosive attacking football against Ighalo and controlled football against Maryland.
What 36 Lion brought
Sheku Fofana, Ridwan Aremu, Joel Anthony, Collins Kadiri, Hussein Lukman, Isah Mohammed, Chisom David Onyenuforo and Uche Emeribe are among the players in a squad containing considerable experience and attacking variety.
Against Maryland, however, it was the collective defensive performance that stood out. They protected the advantage and refused to allow Maryland to turn the game around.
What Maryland United brought
Maryland came into the match after beating Crystal FC 2–1. They showed that they can win close matches, but against 36 Lion they were unable to produce the equaliser.
Their qualification hopes are still alive. With three points, they remain in contention for one of the top two places or potentially one of the best third-place positions.
WHAT NEXT?
The three results have created three very different qualification stories:
Group Team Points after result Situation
A Vido 99 4 Strong position, but qualification not sealed
A JP Young Stars 2 Must win/collect points in final game
F Collins Edwin 3 Excellent goal difference; group remains open
F ECAS FA 0 Needs a major response in remaining games
D 36 Lion 6 In commanding position
D Maryland United 3 Still firmly in the qualification battle
The official competition format awards three points for a win and one for a draw, with the top two in each group advancing automatically and four third-placed teams also progressing.
The bigger picture
36 Lion have built momentum. Vido 99 have preserved their unbeaten position. Collins Edwin have dramatically improved their qualification prospects.
But the most fascinating aspect is that no team can afford to treat the remaining games casually. The final matches will not simply be about winning—they could come down to goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference.
At this stage of the 1XCUP, every goal is beginning to look like a qualification goal.
