The grand finale and closing ceremony of the 2026 1XCUP grassroots football tournament will receive a major boost with the expected presence of former Super Eagles captain, Odion Ighalo, as a featured guest at Inspire Sport Arena, Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos, on Saturday, October 31.
The appearance of the former Nigerian international is expected to add glamour, excitement and inspiration to the eagerly anticipated final, bringing the tournament closer to its ambition of creating opportunities for young footballers to showcase their talents and pursue their dreams.
Ighalo, who represented Nigeria at the highest level and captained the Super Eagles, remains a familiar figure in Nigerian football. His presence at the final will provide an opportunity for grassroots players to see and interact with a football personality whose career offers an example of the possibilities that can emerge from dedication, discipline and hard work.
For the players competing for the ultimate prize, having a former Super Eagles captain at the venue could serve as additional motivation to give their best on the pitch. Beyond the excitement of lifting the trophy, the occasion will allow them to appreciate the importance of professionalism, perseverance, teamwork and the right attitude towards the game.
The young footballers will also have an opportunity to draw inspiration from Ighalo’s journey through professional football, reinforcing the belief that grassroots competitions can serve as important stepping stones for aspiring talents.
For the organisers of 1XCUP, Ighalo’s expected presence represents an important moment in the tournament’s development. It reinforces the value of combining competitive grassroots football with visibility, mentorship and exposure for emerging players.
The tournament has provided a platform for community-based teams to compete, demonstrate their abilities and attract attention to their footballing potential. The involvement of a recognised Nigerian football figure further strengthens its profile and could help attract greater interest from sponsors, scouts, football administrators and other stakeholders in the years ahead.
Beyond the final result, the event is an opportunity to celebrate the players, coaches, team officials, supporters and organisers who have contributed to the competition. It also highlights the need for sustained investment in grassroots football, where many young players begin their journey towards professional careers.
As the countdown continues to Saturday’s showdown at Inspire Sport Arena, the presence of Odion Ighalo is expected to make the 1XCUP final more memorable, turning the occasion into not just a contest for silverware but also a celebration of ambition, talent and the future of Nigerian football.
The final and closing ceremony are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos.
