The Orege Football Pitch came alive with passion, nostalgia, and community pride as the 2nd edition of the Nevany/St. Mary All Stars Above 40 Championship delivered a week-long spectacle of football and fitness.
Sponsored by the ever-supportive Chief John Akpan, the tournament brought together veteran footballers who proved that age is no barrier to skill, determination, and love for the game. From the opening whistle to the final kick, the championship celebrated not just competition, but unity and enduring sportsmanship.
The grand finale between Fire by Force All Stars and Mile 2 All Stars was nothing short of dramatic. Both sides battled fiercely, showcasing experience and tactical discipline, but could not be separated in regulation time. The tension peaked during the penalty shootout, where Fire by Force held their nerve to edge Mile 2 All Stars 4-3, emerging as champions to loud cheers from an electrified crowd.
Earlier in the day, Okoko All Stars delivered a commanding performance in the third-place match, defeating A.A All Stars 4-0 in a dominant display that underlined their attacking prowess and solid teamwork.
Beyond the matches, the championship was a full-fledged community festival. Over the course of one week, activities such as a draft competition, jogging sessions, and short-distance races engaged participants and spectators alike, promoting fitness and camaraderie among attendees.
At the closing ceremony, outstanding individuals were recognized with awards in various categories, including Best Player and Best Goalkeeper, highlighting exceptional performances throughout the tournament.
The prize distribution added further excitement to the occasion, with the champions, Fire by Force All Stars, taking home ₦500,000. Runners-up Mile 2 All Stars received ₦300,000, while third-place finishers Okoko All Stars were rewarded with ₦150,000.
The success of this second edition reinforces the growing importance of veteran football in community development. More than just a tournament, the Nevany/St. Mary All Stars Championship continues to serve as a platform for bonding, wellness, and the preservation of football culture at the grassroots level.
