As Hajji Gafar Olawale Liameed, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), celebrates his birthday, the occasion offers more than an opportunity to send felicitations—it is a moment to reflect on a football administrator whose passion for grassroots development has continued to make an impact across Lagos.
Since assuming leadership of the LSFA, Liameed has championed a vision centred on talent discovery, youth development, competitive football and stronger opportunities for clubs, players and other stakeholders. His administration has placed renewed emphasis on grassroots football and creating platforms where young players can showcase their abilities.
Under his leadership, the Lagos FA Cup has continued to serve as an important pathway for clubs and emerging talents, while the association has also strengthened its engagement with academies and youth football programmes. The 2026 Lagos FA Cup, for instance, was presented not merely as a competition for trophies but as a vehicle for developing talents and empowering young players.
Liameed’s contribution to youth football also extends beyond competition organisation. His long-standing involvement in grassroots football, including through 36 Lion FC, has given him valuable experience in identifying and nurturing young talents. His appointment as South-West coordinator for the 2025 NPFL U19 Youth Championship further reflected recognition of his experience and commitment to youth development.
Perhaps one of his most significant contributions has been his advocacy for taking football closer to the communities. In discussing grassroots competitions, Liameed has repeatedly stressed the importance of creating opportunities for young footballers across Lagos and making the state a stronger hub for the development of the game.
Beyond trophies and tournaments, his football philosophy is about giving young people a platform, giving clubs room to grow and ensuring that talent does not go unnoticed. His administration has also spoken about improving football facilities and providing a better environment for teams to thrive.
