The opening two matchdays of the 2026/27 EUROMATCH Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have already provided an intriguing glimpse of what promises to be a fiercely contested campaign, with established clubs, promoted sides and emerging challengers all making early statements.
The official NPFL records confirm that the new season has been branded EUROMATCH-NPFL, with the opening round producing several impressive results.
The season opened with Shooting Stars defeating Inter Lagos 2–1, immediately giving the Ibadan side three valuable points while handing the newcomers a taste of the demands of top-flight football.
Ikorodu City also announced their intentions in style, defeating Ranchers Bees 3–1, while Doma United recorded a convincing 2–0 victory over Sporting Lagos.
In Kano, Barau FC produced one of the results of the opening weekend, defeating Nasarawa United 3–1. Niger Tornadoes also started strongly with a 2–1 victory over Enyimba.
At the other end, Rivers United made an emphatic start by beating Plateau United 2–0, while Bendel Insurance edged Warri Wolves 2–1. Rangers International and Katsina United shared the points in a 1–1 draw, while Kwara United and Kano Pillars played out a thrilling 2–2 draw. Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat settled for a goalless draw.
The biggest thriller came at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where Kano Pillars defeated Niger Tornadoes 3–2 in a five-goal contest. The result was particularly significant after Pillars had opened the campaign with a 2–2 draw against Kwara United.
Nasarawa United bounced back from their opening-day defeat by securing a narrow 1–0 victory over Bendel Insurance, while Plateau United also responded positively to their Matchday One loss by beating Kwara United 1–0.
The meeting between Kun Khalifat and Barau FC ended goalless, giving both sides a point. Meanwhile, Doma United continued their impressive start, defeating Inter Lagos 1–0 away from home.
Several Matchday Two fixtures were postponed, including Enyimba–Shooting Stars, Katsina United–Rivers United and Warri Wolves–Rangers, while the Sporting Lagos–Ikorodu City fixture was moved to September 30 because of venue unavailability.
Two rounds into the campaign, several storylines are already developing.
Doma United have emerged as one of the early surprise packages, winning both of their opening matches. Rivers United, despite having their Matchday Two fixture postponed, also made a strong opening statement with their 2–0 victory over Plateau United.
For Kano Pillars, the 3–2 victory over Niger Tornadoes could prove to be an important confidence booster. Meanwhile, the promoted clubs are showing that they have come into the NPFL prepared to compete rather than merely participate.
The postponed fixtures will also become increasingly important as the table begins to take shape, particularly for clubs such as Rivers United and Enyimba whose early schedules have been affected by other competitions.
Attention now turns to Matchday Three, with Doma United hosting Enyimba, Shooting Stars welcoming Kano Pillars, Bendel Insurance facing Kun Khalifat, Rivers United hosting Warri Wolves, and Kwara United taking on Katsina United among the confirmed fixtures.
The early weeks of the EUROMATCH-NPFL season have already demonstrated that there may be very little separating the contenders. With new clubs eager to establish themselves and traditional powers looking to regain control, the 2026/27 campaign is shaping up as a season where every point could matter.
The league is only two matchdays old — but the race for supremacy has already begun.
