Watching Ezri Konsa play for Arsenal in the games against Chelsea and Napoli answered my question of how good is he? I didn’t know much about him until Arsenal signed him. Having seen his ability another question has kept me pleasantly surprised and wondering, how did rivals let him join Arsenal?

Arsenal already possessed the best defence in the Premier League. William Saliba and Gabriel formed a partnership that made elite strikers look ordinary. The numbers backed it up. The eye test confirmed it. Everyone in English football knew it.
And still, they let Ezri Konsa walk through the door.

How does a defender of that quality, slip past rivals especially Manchester United and Chelsea? Two clubs with clear defensive needs, two clubs who spent big money elsewhere, two clubs who somehow failed to identify the one player who could have immediately elevated their back line.
I have gone to look at his days at Aston Villa and Konsa was never a secret. He was consistent, physical, composed under pressure, and excellent on the ball.
He started regularly for England at the World Cup. He had European experience. He was the complete modern centre-back: athletic enough to recover, strong enough to dominate, calm enough to play out from the back.
Arsenal saw it. They moved. They signed him.
Now look at what is happening.
Saliba is sidelined with a long-term back injury. In the past, that kind of absence would have caused genuine concern. Instead, Konsa has stepped in and made the transition look almost effortless.
Against Napoli he was outstanding β dominating Rasmus HΓΈjlund, covering ground with ease, completing every single pass, and helping deliver another clean sheet in a difficult away environment. We all saw his exploits against Chelsea last Sunday.
He looks like he has been part of this defence for years, not weeks.
The presence. The confidence. The calmness. The ability to read danger early and deal with it without drama. These are not traits you can coach overnight. They are the hallmarks of a top-level defender who was already ready for this stage.
United and Chelsea had the chance. They had the resources. They had the need. But not the eye. They let him go to a side that already possessed the strongest defensive foundation in the league.
That is the biggest mistake of the window.
Because Arsenal did not just strengthen a strength. They removed a problem that never arrived. While rivals search for solutions, the champions simply continue β unbothered, organised, and now even deeper than before.
Some clubs spend money.
Others spend it wisely.
This summer, Arsenal did both.
