Rotary Club, District 1260, members in St Albans recently had the privilege of hearing an inspiring and deeply moving story from President Tarela during the ongoing International OI awareness Day celebration in Hertfordshire,
Representing the OI Foundation Network, Nigeria and UK, President Tarela shared her personal journey and advocacy work while helping to shine a brighter spotlight on osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), commonly known as brittle bone disease — a rare genetic condition that affects bones and causes them to break easily, often with little or no apparent cause.
Her presentation not only educated attendees about the realities and challenges faced by individuals living with OI, but also emphasised the importance of inclusion, medical support, awareness, and community compassion. Through courage and determination, she highlighted the resilience of people living with the condition and the urgent need for stronger advocacy and support systems around the world.
The event also comes at a remarkable milestone moment as the OI Foundation Nigeria proudly celebrates 10 years of dedicated service to humanity. Over the past decade, the organization has continued to champion awareness campaigns, support families affected by OI, promote access to healthcare, and give hope to countless individuals living with the condition across Nigeria and beyond.
The engagement with the Rotarians in St. Albans served as both a celebration of progress and a call to action — encouraging communities, healthcare professionals, and global partners to continue supporting efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for people living with osteogenesis imperfecta.
