The dream of taking Nigerian grassroots football to the global stage has received a major boost as the 1XCUP 2026 enters another exciting phase with an international scouting partnership involving Mapo Investment.

The partnership is opening a potentially significant pathway for outstanding players from the competition, with scouts and sporting directors from some of Europe’s respected football institutions arriving to watch, assess and identify emerging talents participating in the tournament.
Among the clubs represented in the international scouting programme are Deportivo La Coruña, Málaga CF and CE Sabadell, with football representatives from Spain expected to pay close attention to the quality and potential of players emerging from the 1XCUP.
Adding another important dimension to the scouting programme is Benjamin James, a Nigerian football coach based in Germany and U-19 coach at TSG Hoffenheim, who is also part of the international football network now being connected to the competition.

The presence of these football professionals represents more than just another attraction around the 1XCUP. It provides young players competing at grassroots level with the opportunity to have their abilities assessed by people operating within established European football structures.
AKANI: THE MAN BEHIND THE GLOBAL CONNECTION
A major figure in making the initiative possible is Engr. Waidi Akani, Technical Director of the 1XCUP, whose efforts have continued to expand the technical and international dimension of the competition.
Akani has been working behind the scenes to ensure that the tournament is not simply about winning trophies and prize money, but also about creating a genuine football ecosystem where talented players can be discovered, developed and connected to opportunities beyond Nigeria.
His latest initiative with Mapo Investment further strengthens that vision.

The international scouts also held engagements with the leadership and directors of the 1XCUP, including Managing Director Ms. Geraldine, Mr. Nnana, Mr. Dimeji and other members of the competition’s management team.
The meetings provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on player development, scouting structures, academy football, international pathways and the future direction of the 1XCUP.
FROM GRASSROOTS TO EUROPE
For the players still battling through the group stages and knockout race, the arrival of the scouts adds another layer of excitement.
Every pass, tackle, run, save and goal can now carry an additional significance, as players know that performances could attract the attention of football professionals looking for the next generation of talent.
The 1XCUP began with more than 100 teams embarking on the journey, making the competition a massive grassroots football platform. As the tournament moves towards its decisive stages, the presence of international scouts gives the competition an even wider dimension.
It is a message to young Nigerian footballers that the road from the community pitch to international football can begin at a tournament like the 1XCUP.
With Mapo Investment bringing international scouting into the equation, and Engr. Waidi Akani driving the technical vision, the 1XCUP is steadily positioning itself as more than a grassroots tournament.
It is becoming a talent-discovery bridge between Nigerian football and the international game.
And with Spanish clubs watching, a German-based Nigerian coach scouting and the 1XCUP management pushing the boundaries, the next big discovery could be only one outstanding performance away.
