The latest results at the 1XCUP 2026 group stage show just how quickly the competition is changing. At this stage, every point has greater value, because the format sends the top two teams in each group through automatically,

while four of the best third-placed teams also qualify for the 16-team knockout phase.

The three matches on Wednesday produced seven goals, but more importantly, they revealed different tactical battles: a fightback and narrow victory in Group A, an attacking shootout in Group C, and a cagey contest in Group B.
EMILOJU FC 2–1 BYT ACADEMICAL FC
Group A — Experience meets desperation
This was perhaps the most consequential game of the three because both teams entered knowing that the margin for error was becoming extremely small.
Emiloju had already lost 3–1 to Vido 99 in their opening match, while BYT Academical had drawn 1–1 with JP Young Stars.
That meant Wednesday’s encounter was effectively a pressure game for both sides.
Emiloju eventually came through 2–1, moving to six points from two matches. The victory dramatically changed the complexion of Group A.
The strength equation
Emiloju’s strength: resilience and the ability to recover from a difficult opening result. Their four goals conceded across two matches before Wednesday showed defensive vulnerability, but they have demonstrated that they can produce results when the pressure rises.
BYT’s strength: they have shown that they can stay competitive. Their earlier 1–1 draw with JP Young Stars demonstrated defensive organisation, and their narrow 2–1 defeat to Emiloju means they remain alive.
The problem for BYT is that they now have only one point from two matches.
What next?
The Group A picture is now extremely interesting. Vido 99 have three points from one game, Emiloju have three points from two games according to the official table currently displayed, JP Young Stars have one point, and BYT have one.
The next scheduled Group A game is Vido 99 vs JP Young Stars on September 24.
That match could have major implications because Vido 99 can strengthen their position, while JP Young Stars need points to prevent the group from becoming a two-team race.
Group A is entering its decisive phase.
AJUWA FA 2–2 TONIC FC
Group C — The heavyweight clash
This was arguably the most explosive game of the day.
Ajuwa entered the group stage with a statement 4–0 victory over Joy Cometh, while Tonic had drawn 1–1 with Mega 22 in their opening match.
The contrast was clear: Ajuwa arrived with attacking momentum; Tonic arrived knowing that another draw would leave them needing a strong finish.
And the match delivered.
Ajuwa scored first through Emeka Sylvester, before Tonic responded with two goals. Ajuwa eventually levelled through Otto Paul, assisted by Sylvester.
The official match record shows the four goals were scored between the 34th and 60th minutes, with the contest also producing several yellow cards.
Ajuwa’s attacking threat
Ajuwa have now scored six goals in two group matches and remain unbeaten.
Even more significant is Emeka Sylvester’s contribution. He scored a hat-trick in the opening 4–0 victory and scored again against Tonic, taking his tournament tally to five according to the official 1XCUP statistics.
That makes Ajuwa particularly dangerous going forward.
But Tonic have answered the challenge
Tonic did something important: they refused to allow Ajuwa’s opening victory to intimidate them.
They had already drawn with Mega 22 and now drew 2–2 with Ajuwa. They remain unbeaten after two matches.
That suggests a team capable of competing in close games rather than collapsing when placed under pressure.
The Group C pressure cooker
Before the latest result, Ajuwa had three points and a +4 goal difference, while Mega 22 and Tonic had one point each. Joy Cometh had lost their opening game 4–0.
The 2–2 draw means the group is now wide open.
Ajuwa have established themselves as an attacking force, but Tonic have shown they can match them.
And that could make the final group fixtures extremely tense.
NEWHOPE NAIJA FC 1–0 DIVINE PRAISE FC
Group B — One goal, enormous consequences
This was completely different from Ajuwa–Tonic.
One goal separated the teams, and that single goal could have a major impact on the final Group B calculations.
Before this match, Newhope Naija and Kiraa FA had both drawn their opening matches 0–0, while Crusaders had yet to play.
Divine Praise were therefore entering their first group match.
Newhope’s 1–0 victory gives them four points from two matches and, crucially, their second clean sheet of the group stage.
Defensive strength
Newhope’s story is becoming increasingly clear.
Their opening 0–0 against Kiraa was a defensive contest, and they followed it with another clean sheet against Divine Praise.
That gives them a platform built around defensive discipline rather than simply trying to overwhelm opponents with goals.
Divine Praise’s challenge
For Divine Praise, the 1–0 defeat makes their remaining games extremely important.
They cannot afford to allow the group to run away from them.
But they still have two matches available, meaning the result is not the end of their campaign.
And then there is Kiraa
Kiraa’s 2–2 draw with Crusaders on September 22 means they also have two points from two matches.
So Group B has quickly become a fascinating battle involving Newhope, Kiraa, Crusaders and Divine Praise.
There is very little separating the teams.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: THE GROUP STAGE IS NOW MOVING INTO THE SURVIVAL ZONE
The 1XCUP began with 100 grassroots teams, eventually producing 24 teams for the group phase. Those 24 were divided into six groups of four. The top two from each group qualify automatically, with the four strongest third-placed teams completing the Round of 16.
That format is important.
It means a team can lose a match and still qualify.
But it also means goal difference, goals scored and every single point can become decisive.
The opening group matches already produced 22 goals across nine games, showing the attacking quality of the competition.
Now the temperature is rising.
What we should expect next
1. More tactical football
Teams will become increasingly careful about conceding early goals. A 1–0 victory can become more valuable than an entertaining 4–3 defeat.
2. More pressure on the teams at the bottom
The sides with one point or zero points will have to attack their remaining fixtures more aggressively.
3. Goal difference will become important
Ajuwa’s +4 after their opening 4–0 win illustrates why scoring margins matter. In a competition where four third-placed teams can also advance, goal difference can potentially separate teams on the same number of points.
4. The final group matches could feel like knockout games
The closer the groups get to completion, the less room there will be for conservative football.
5. Individual stars will become increasingly important
Emeka Sylvester is already one of the tournament’s leading scorers with five goals, while Kiraa’s Emmanuel Ben is also on five.
THE ROAD AHEAD
The next scheduled fixtures include Collins Edwin SC vs ECAS FA, Vido 99 vs JP Young Stars and 36 Lion FC vs Maryland United FC on September 24.
Those matches underline the new reality of the 1XCUP: there are no comfortable games anymore.
The qualification phase was about surviving long enough to reach the 24.
Now the group stage is about surviving the pressure of being among the 24.
And as the matches accumulate, the difference between advancing to the Round of 16 and watching the knockout stage from the sidelines could come down to one goal, one point—or one moment of concentration.
